West Virginia offers some of the best skiing and snowboarding on the east coast, making it a must-visit winter destination! The top 4 ski resorts in the state have a variety of slopes, suitable for all levels. Known as the Mountain State, there’s no doubt that a trip to West Virginia for the stunning sceneries and fun activities are well worth it!



When to Visit


Ski Season generally runs from around the end of November to the end of March. The coldest months of the year are January and February, which is when you’ll see the most snowfall. If you’re wanting to avoid large crowds, don’t plan you’re trip around the holidays.



Snowshoe Mountain


Snowshoe is known for the adventurous terrain, variety of slopes, and the lively mountaintop village. In the village, there are places for eating, drinking, and shopping! If you’re looking to take a break from the slopes, Snowshoe offers other fun outdoor winter activities such as off-road tours, snowmobile tours, and tubing.

Timberline Mountain


Timberline is located in Canaan Valley, less than 30 minutes from two cute neighboring towns called Thomas and Davis. This region of the state is outstandingly beautiful, with Dolly Sods and Blackwater Falls State Park not too far from the resort. Timberline is also opening this year under new ownership, with huge improvements made to the mountain as a result.

Canaan Valley Ski Resort


15 minutes down the road from Timberline is Canaan Valley Ski Resort. Aside from skiing and snowboarding, Canaan has cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, and tubing. With 47 trails, the resort is great for all levels. Both Canaan Valley and Timberline are only a 3-hour drive from Washington, D.C.


Winterplace Ski Resort


Just 1-hour from Charleston, West Virginia, Winterplace is a good option for people wanting to see the state’s capital while visiting. Winterplace, being the smallest of the resorts, is meant for the perfect day trip! The resort also has a snow tubing park.
